What is turmeric – and why is everyone talking about it?
Turmeric is the root of the plant Curcuma longa, from the same family as ginger. It gives curry powder its yellow colour and has been used in Indian cooking and traditional medicine for thousands of years.
The active group of compounds is called curcuminoids, of which curcumin is the most studied. In dried turmeric, curcumin makes up only around 2–5 percent. That is why many people choose standardised extracts.
Which turmeric benefits are supported by research?
Most of the data centres on four areas. None of them makes turmeric a medicine, but the direction is interesting.
- Inflammation. Curcumin affects signalling pathways linked to inflammation in cell experiments and smaller studies.
- Joints. Several studies in people with osteoarthritis have seen reduced stiffness compared with placebo.
- Antioxidants. Curcumin acts as an antioxidant and may support the body's own defences against free radicals.
- Digestion. Traditionally used for bloating; a few studies support its use for mild digestive discomfort.
Turmeric and joints: what do the studies say?
Joint health is the area with the strongest human data. In a 2016 analysis, researchers pooled eight studies and found that curcumin extract at around 1,000 mg per day reduced self-reported joint pain and stiffness.
The effects were moderate and the studies short, typically 8–12 weeks. The researchers called for larger and longer trials before drawing firm conclusions. If you have ongoing joint pain, talk to a doctor – do not swap treatment for a supplement.

A major problem with turmeric is bioavailability. Curcumin is broken down quickly in the liver and gut, so little of it reaches the bloodstream. That is one reason why results in test tubes do not always show up in humans.

Turmeric in food or as a supplement?
Sprinkling turmeric into your cooking adds flavour and colour but fairly little curcumin. A teaspoon of dried turmeric contains perhaps 60–200 mg of curcumin, and absorption is low without pepper and fat.

Who should be careful?

Turmeric, mood and brain: what does the data look like?
A growing research area concerns curcumin and mental wellbeing. In a few smaller studies, participants taking curcumin reported improvements in low mood compared with placebo.
The studies are small, short and inconsistent in design. They point in an interesting direction but are not enough to call turmeric a treatment. If you are struggling mentally, seek professional care – do not replace support with a spice supplement.
Turmeric and cardiovascular health
Curcumin's role as an antioxidant has led researchers to look at vascular function. A few studies have seen improved function in the inner walls of blood vessels in middle-aged and older people after a few weeks of supplementation.
Here too, the evidence is thin and the effects moderate. The best things you can do for your heart are still diet, movement, sleep and not smoking. Turmeric can be a small complement, not a shortcut.
Traditional use through history
Turmeric has been used for over 4,000 years in South Asian cooking and in Ayurveda. Its colour has made the root both a food dye and a symbol in ceremonies.
Traditional use is not the same as scientific proof, but it explains why modern research started taking a closer look at the plant. Many of the early observations have led to today's studies.
How to get the most out of turmeric
If you want to give turmeric the best possible chance, three things matter:
- Combine it with black pepper for better absorption of curcumin.
- Take it with fat – curcumin is fat-soluble.
- Be consistent – curcumin is not stored in the body, so a daily dose beats occasional big efforts.

Turmeric and training: does it help recovery?
Active people have taken an interest in curcumin as support for muscle soreness. The idea rests on the compound's role in inflammatory processes, which are a normal part of how muscles recover after hard training.
A few smaller studies have seen slightly less muscle soreness and faster perceived recovery in participants who took curcumin around tough sessions. The effects were small and the studies short, so see it as a possible complement to sleep, protein and rest – not a replacement.
What the research cannot yet answer
Despite many promising signals, there are clear gaps. Most studies are small, short and use different extracts and doses, which makes results hard to compare directly.
We also lack large long-term studies in healthy people. That is why serious sources describe turmeric as "promising but not yet proven". It is a reasonable stance: curious, but without exaggeration.
Turmeric for skin and ageing
Curcumin's role as an antioxidant has sparked interest in skin health. The idea is that antioxidants may support the body's defences against free radicals, which are generated by sun exposure and stress, among other things.
The evidence for skin is weak and mostly focused on topical products in studies, not supplements. A varied diet with vegetables, berries and enough sleep does more for your skin than any single spice. If you see turmeric as a small plus rather than a skin cure, you have it about right.
Is turmeric right for you?
Turmeric may be worth trying if you are curious about a plant-based complement and it agrees with your stomach. It is a poorer fit if you expect fast, dramatic effects or take medication that could be affected.

Do I need to take turmeric with black pepper?

Can I get enough through food alone?
