Best Probiotics 2026 – We Tested 18 Brands
We reviewed 18 brands to find the best probiotics in 2026
Discover the top-rated probiotic supplements for 2026

Probiotics have become one of the best-selling supplements on the market, and the range is enormous. Some products contain a single well-studied bacterial strain, others stack ten different strains in the same capsule. Prices range from very cheap to well over five hundred. But more bacteria on the label does not automatically mean a better effect – what matters is which strains are included, how many live bacteria actually reach the gut and whether the supplement delivers what it promises all the way to the best-before date. We went through 18 of the most common brands and compared strains, CFU count, format, price and guarantee. Here are the five that stood out.

What are probiotics?
Probiotics are live microorganisms, most often lactic acid bacteria, supplied to the body via supplements or food. The most common genera are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. The name lactic acid bacteria comes from the fact that the bacteria produce lactic acid as they multiply. The gut naturally hosts trillions of bacteria, and the idea behind a probiotic supplement is to add more of the bacterial types considered beneficial for the digestive tract.
A good supplement states both which strains it contains and the number of live bacteria, measured in CFU (colony forming units). Many products combine bacteria with prebiotic fibers such as fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) or inulin – fibers that act as food for the bacteria. Such a combination is called a synbiotic.
It is worth knowing that health authorities and the EU agency EFSA place high demands on what probiotic products may claim. Research in the field is extensive but still strain-specific: the effect of one bacterial strain cannot automatically be transferred to another. So we prefer to look at documentation, strains and quality rather than sweeping promises.
Look for supplements that state exactly which bacterial strains they contain and how many live bacteria (CFU) you get per dose. Many people choose products with at least 10 billion CFU per daily dose and a mix of several Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains for broader coverage.
Supplements that combine bacteria with prebiotic fibers such as FOS or inulin give the bacteria food. That combination is called a synbiotic and gives more bacteria a chance to establish themselves.
Choose products made in a GMP-certified facility and lab-tested. That gives you better assurance that the number of live bacteria really matches the label all the way to the best-before date.
A supplement with a money-back guarantee lets you try it at your own pace. Check how long the guarantee period is and whether it also applies to opened packages.
If the package just says 'lactic acid bacteria' without naming the strains or stating the CFU, it is hard to know what you actually get. Serious manufacturers always disclose strains and count.
Avoid brands that promise to 'cure' or 'heal' diseases. Such claims are not permitted for supplements and are a sign of dishonest marketing.
Some cheap supplements contain more filler than active bacteria. Watch for a short ingredient list and avoid unnecessary colorants and sweeteners.

1. VitaNord VitaFlora
PROS
CONS

Conclusion
VitaFlora lands at the top of our review because it gets right the things that actually matter in a probiotic supplement. You get six different bacterial strains from both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, and 10 billion CFU per capsule – enough to support a normal gut flora day after day [3,10].
What lifts the product an extra notch is that it is a true synbiotic. The bacteria are combined with prebiotic FOS fibers from chicory, which act as food for the beneficial gut bacteria [8,11]. Many competitors offer either just bacteria or just fibers – here you get both in the same capsule.
The quality side feels well considered. VitaFlora is made in a GMP-certified facility, is lab-tested and non-GMO. The capsules are vegetable-based and the ingredient list is short, without unnecessary additives. That gives good assurance that the number of live bacteria really holds up all the way to the best-before date.
Dosing is flexible: 1–2 capsules one to two times a day on an empty stomach, so you can scale up or down as needed. For anyone wanting to support digestion and regular bowel function, it is a simple routine to keep [6,9].
Then there is purchase protection. A 60-day money-back guarantee means you can try it at your own pace, and customer support is available around the clock. That is a level of service few of the traditional pharmacy brands match.
The only real objections are that VitaFlora is sold online only and that it periodically runs out due to high demand. But for anyone who wants a complete synbiotic supplement with documented quality and a real guarantee, VitaFlora is hard to beat in 2026.
2. Probi Original (Probi Mage)
PROS
CONS
Conclusion
Probi Original, previously sold as Probi Mage, is probably the best-known probiotic brand in its home market and lands a strong second place. Its strength lies in LP299v (Lactobacillus plantarum 299v) – a bacterial strain among the most clinically studied in the world, shown to survive passage through the stomach and attach to the intestinal lining [1,2].
With 10 billion bacteria per capsule and 80 capsules per pack, you get a product that lasts a long time and that the whole family can use from age three. The capsules are vegetable-based, and the long history behind the brand provides a well-earned reassurance.
The limitation is that Probi Original is built on a single strain. That can be an advantage if you specifically want LP299v and its documentation, but it does not offer the breadth of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains several competitors provide. The product also lacks prebiotic fibers, so it is pure probiotics rather than a synbiotic.
Price-wise it sits at a mid-range level for 80 capsules, which is reasonable. The downside is that it is sold through pharmacies and retailers without any money-back guarantee of its own from the manufacturer. If you want a solid, clinically documented single-strain supplement, Probi Original is still one of the safest choices on the market.
3. Great Earth Mjölksyrabakterier
PROS
CONS
Conclusion
Great Earth Mjölksyrabakterier is a real all-rounder and takes a well-deserved third place. Its biggest strength is breadth: nine different bacterial strains in the same capsule, with a total of 10 billion CFU. On top of that come prebiotic fibers in the form of FOS and inulin, which makes it a synbiotic [8,11].
The product is vegan and works even if you are lactose intolerant or have a milk protein allergy. A single capsule a day is enough, which makes it easy to fit into a routine. The combination of breadth, prebiotics and low intake makes it one of the more complete supplements in the mid-price range.
There are still a couple of things to weigh in. The pack holds only 60 capsules, so it lasts a shorter time than, say, Probi with its 80. The price also varies considerably between retailers, so it pays to compare before buying.
Like the other pharmacy and health-food brands, Great Earth lacks a money-back guarantee of its own. But if you are looking for a broad, vegan synbiotic supplement at a reasonable price, it is a very good choice, and one of the strongest challengers in this comparison.
4. Synbiotic15 Daily
PROS
CONS
Conclusion
Synbiotic15 Daily is the most ambitious synbiotic in the test and lands in fourth place. Each daily dose delivers 15 billion bacteria from five strains together with a full 4 grams of dietary fiber. That is considerably more fiber than the capsule-based competitors offer, and the combination of bacteria and fibers is the very idea behind a synbiotic [10].
The product rests on a long research tradition – it is built on professor Stig Bengmark's work with synbiotic preparations and developed in Sweden. The high CFU count and fiber amount make it a powerful option for anyone who wants to invest properly in their gut flora.
But there are clear downsides. At a premium price for 30 doses, it is clearly the most expensive in the comparison, several times more per day than the cheapest capsules. The format is also a powder that has to be stirred into a glass of water, which is less convenient than swallowing a capsule, especially when traveling.
Synbiotic15 is sold only through pharmacies and health stores without any money-back guarantee of its own. It is a good choice for anyone who specifically wants a fiber-rich synbiotic and does not mind the powder format or the price – but for most people the overall value ends up lower than the capsule options higher up the list.
5. Lactiplus
PROS
CONS
Conclusion
Lactiplus rounds out our top five as the clear budget option. The product contains five billion lactic acid bacteria from six strains and three different bacterial genera, plus FOS fibers that feed the bacteria. That breadth of strains is actually a strength in the price range [6].
A nice addition is that Lactiplus has also added calcium, vitamin C and selenium. These have authorized EFSA claims – vitamin C and selenium contribute to the normal function of the immune system, and calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes. That gives the product a little extra added value without the price climbing.
The big limitation is the CFU count. With 5 billion bacteria per dose, Lactiplus sits lowest in this comparison, roughly half what Great Earth and Probi offer and a third of Synbiotic15. Fewer live bacteria need not mean the product is ineffective, but the margins get smaller – especially toward the best-before date.
Price-wise, however, it is hard to beat, above all in the large 120-capsule pack at a budget price. It is sold widely at pharmacies but lacks a guarantee of its own. For anyone who wants to get started with probiotics at low cost, Lactiplus is a reasonable first choice, but if you want a higher CFU count and a real guarantee, there are better options higher up the list.
